Haven’t actually read all of these but since I’m going to be reading them pretty sporadically over the next few months I thought I may as well rate the book now. Some of these poems are absolutely beautiful and really show Borges at his best. Some slightly less so but they’re great nonetheless. This edition comes with both the original Spanish versions and the English translations. The preface by Norman di Giovanni on how the poems were selected and translated in collaboration with the author is really interesting (Borges himself, being a man who spoke many languages fluently and studied Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon English for fun, has a lot of interesting things to say on the art of translation). I’ll probably get round to writing something more substantial on Borges’ poetry when I’ve finished this but for now I’ll just leave it with a satisfying 5* rating.
